The Best 11 Ways to Hurt Your Career

By Megan Malugani, Monster Contributing Writer.

While most Career advice focuses on how to succeed, we can all learn valuable lessons by dissecting Career failure as well. Workplace experts offer insights into some of the top ways workers undermine their own careers and jeopardize their career development.

1. Not Taking Your Education Seriously
If you party too much in college and end up with a run-of-the-mill 2.5 GPA, you'll be passed over for the best entry-level jobs, says New York City-based executive recruiter and coach Brian Drum, of Drum Associates. Not finishing your master's degree is another way to hurt your career-development goals, adds Anne Angerman, a Career coach with Denver-based Career Matters.

2. Not Having a Plan
In the current poor Job market, you may have defaulted into a Career you aren't crazy about. That's OK, as long as you develop Career plans to get where you want to be. "Think of every Job you take as a stepping-stone to your next Job," Drum advises.

3. Lying
You'll lose professional credibility in a hurry if you lie, from exaggerating on your resume to getting caught fibbing on Facebook. "If someone calls in sick to work and then that evening posts a photo on Facebook of their extra day vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, that's a big problem," says corporate etiquette specialist Diane Gottsman of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio.

4. Sullying Your Reputation on Facebook or Twitter
Social media can harm your reputation in other ways, too. Personal posts and tweets from work--when you're supposed to be doing your job--can tag you as a slacker. And the content of your posts or tweets can come back to haunt you as well--you never know who might stumble upon those bachelor-party photos. "You need to assume that every boss and potential employer knows how to use Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, and post from the standpoint that everyone is watching--even if in reality they're not," Gottsman says.

5. Not Respecting Professional Boundaries
Sharing TMI about your personal life with colleagues is unprofessional. "Your coworkers don't want to hear about your fights with your husband," Angerman says. On the other hand, if you're ultraprivate and work with a chatty group, join the conversations occasionally so coworkers don't resent you.

6. Gossiping, Slandering, and Excessively Criticizing
If you publicly bash fellow employees, the boss, the board of directors, or even your competitors, you'll be perceived as negative at best and a troublemaker at worst. The ramifications can be broad and long-term, Gottsman says. "Industries are tight," she says. "You don't want to be the one who started that rumor about the head of your industry." As far as bad-mouthing competitors--what if your company merges with a competitor, or you want to work for one someday?

7. Carrying on an Inappropriate Relationship with Your Boss|
Never a good idea, but an especially bad one if your boss is married. "When you get involved in a drama or in something unethical that can be brought out in the open, you're asking for trouble," Gottsman says.

8. Not Controlling Your Alcohol Intake or Libido
Getting drunk at the office party or on a business trip damages your credibility. Ditto a romantic, ahem, "indiscretion" that your colleagues know about.

9. Job-Hopping Just for the Money
Job-hopping--in moderation--may not automatically disqualify you from a position. "But it gets to the point--like if you have seven or eight Jobs by the time you're 35--that employers are not going to want to invest in you," Drum says. Also, if you have leadership aspirations, keep in mind that the top dogs of many large corporations have been with those organizations for long periods, he says. Additionally, many companies have "last in, first out" layoff policies, which could leave you out of a Job if you never stick around long enough to build tenure anywhere.

10. Losing Touch with References
You'll kick yourself later if you leave a job without collecting personal contact information from colleagues who can serve as professional references for you in the future. "If you were forced to leave a job and you can't ask your boss for a reference, hopefully you've built up some rapport with a colleague and can ask them," Angerman says.

11. Leaving a Job on Bad Terms
Job Indonesia - Don't become a lame duck when you've got one foot out the door, Drum says. "The employer only remembers about the last five minutes you were there," he says. Give proper notice and don't leave a mess behind. And by all means, do not make a huge dramatic production of it when you quit, complete with cursing, slandering, and throwing things, Gottsman advises. "It's very difficult to get another job when you've left destruction in your wake," she says. - Indonesia Vacancy

Brazil Central Bank Head 'Ousted' as Inflation Rises !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk - Job Indonesia

Job Vacancy - His successor will be the central bank's financial regulation head, Alexandre Tombini, according to a report in Folha de Sao Paulo. - Lowongan Kerja
The widely expected move by recently elected President Dilma Rousseff may pave the way for interest rate cuts.
Yet data released on Tuesday showed that inflation is on the rise again, hitting 5.47% in November.
This is well above the central bank's year-end target of 4.5%.
The choice of Mr Tombini, an economist, from within the bank's ranks may provide some reassurance to financial markets that President Rousseff will not push as aggressively as previously feared for looser monetary policy.

Japan Passes New $61bn Stimulus Package !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Job Vacancy - The stimulus was designed to create jobs, Prime Minister Nato Kan said, through measures to help small businesses and boost consumer spending. Job Indonesia - The government has already introduced several stimulus packages. Earlier, figures showed that Japanese consumer prices fell for the 20th month in a row in October. - Lowongan Kerja
The vote in favour of the latest stimulus measures represents a victory for the government, which has struggled getting the package through parliament.
The move is in marked contrast to European governments' policies, which are focusing on cutting spending to secure growth.

Falling prices

Japan has been struggling with weak growth, a high yen and deflation.
The core consumer price index fell by 0.6% in October compared with a year earlier, official figures showed.
This was a slight improvement on the 1.1% price falls seen in September.
Deflation is particularly damaging to economic growth as consumers delay purchases until prices fall further.
The improvement from September does not reflect any improvement in consumer demand, analysts said.
"Even though the pace of the fall in prices slowed by 0.5 percentage points, this was not due to an improved demand-supply balance," said Asushi Matsumoto at the Mizuho Research Institute.
Instead, he said, it was down to one-off factors, such as a hike in cigarette prices.
This means that "exit from deflation will be slower than previously thought," Mr Matsumoto argued.
Weak exports
Japan is also struggling with a strong yen, which makes exports more expensive to overseas consumers.
Figures released on Thursday showed export growth slowing for the eighth month in a row, with exports to Europe falling for first time for almost a year.
Analysts say weaker exports could also contribute to reduced consumer demand.
"Weak growth in exports could worsen corporate earnings, thus lowering household incomes to dampen consumer demand," Mr Matsumoto said.

Euro Steady After Irish Republic 85bn Euro Bail-Out !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Lowongan Kerja - Ministers have reached an agreement over a bail-out worth about 85bn euros ($113bn; £72bn).
Job Indonesia - The deal will see 35bn euros go towards propping up the Irish banking system, with the remaining 50bn euros to help the government's day-to-day spending.
In early trade on Monday the euro was ahead by 0.40% at $1.3241.
It had earlier slipped to $1.3181, its lowest level since 21 September, before rebounding.
Reassurance
Meanwhile, European Central Bank policymaker Christian Noyer sought to bolster market confidence in the eurozone's rescue for the Republic.
Mr Noyer is the first member of the ECB's policy council to speak after eurozone ministers sealed the deal for Dublin on Sunday.

Start Quote

Mr Osborne hopes the eurosceptics in his own party will be reassured that Britain won't participate in eurozone bail-outs after 2013”
End Quote
He said he was confident the deal would bring down Dublin's borrowing costs to more normal levels.
"There is no reason to doubt the recovery plans of the two countries," Mr Noyer said in a speech in Tokyo, referring to Ireland and Greece.
And French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said the bail-out was "sufficient" and that "irrational" markets were not correctly pricing the sovereign debt situation in Europe.
"The amount [of the bail-out] is sufficient because that will keep Ireland afloat for three years," she told RTL radio.
France and Germany have also said the Republic of Ireland bail-out should draw a line under its debt crisis.
And they have expressed confidence in Portugal's ability to correct its finances and avoid needing outside help.
'Best available deal'
An average interest rate of 5.8% will be payable on the loans, above the 5.2% paid by Greece for its bail-out.
Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen said it was the "best available deal for Ireland".
It provides "vital time and space to successfully and conclusively address the problems we've been dealing with since the financial crisis began", he said.
The Irish government has also said that interest payments on all state debt will account for more than 20% of tax revenues in 2014.
The deal does not require the Republic to change its low 12.5% corporation tax. -  Job Vacancy

Job Indonesia - Nielsen's role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star Veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen, star of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has died at the age of 84. -  Job Vacancy
He died in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia, his agent John S Kelly said. - Lowongan Kerja
Canadian-born Nielsen started out as a serious actor but in 1980, his role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star.
In all, he appeared in more than 100 films and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. "With his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away," his nephew Doug Nielsen said, the AFP news agency reported.
'Don't call me Shirley', born in the Canadian city of Regina in 1926, Leslie Nielsen enjoyed an acting career which spanned six decades. He started as a television actor in New York in 1950, performing in about 150 live dramas.
In the mid-1950s, he moved to Hollywood, where he initially carved out a film career as a leading man, capitalising on his craggy good looks and 6ft2in (194cm) height.
Then in 1980 his deadpan delivery in the comedy disaster movie Airplane! marked him out as a gifted clown, says the BBC's Rajesh Mirchandani in Los Angeles.
It was in this role that he became known for the line "Don't call me Shirley".
The success of Airplane! led to another TV role in the spoof crime show Police Squad where he first played accident-prone detective Frank Drebin.
He went on to make three films as the same character in the Naked Gun series, starring opposite Priscilla Presley.
He continued working into his eighties.
Nearly two weeks ago - at the age of 84 - Nielsen was taken into hospital in Florida where he lived, suffering from pneumonia.
His condition had worsened over the last two days and relatives said he passed away peacefully, our correspondent says.
What are your memories of Leslie Nielsen? Have you met him? What is your favourite film that he starred in? Send us your comments using the form below.

US Condemns Wikileaks Diplomatic Cables Release !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Job Vacancy - Between the revelations is a report Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah urged the US to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. - Lowongan Kerja
Job Indonesia - The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, said the US authorities were afraid of being held to account.
But the White House said the release was "reckless" put the lives of diplomats and others at risk.
One Republican congressman called for Wikileaks to be designated a terrorist organisation.
Peter King, a member of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said the latest release "manifests Mr Assange's purposeful intent to damage not only our national interests in fighting the war on terror, but also undermines the very safety of coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan".
The US Department of Defence says it is making its computer systems more secure to prevent future leaks.

Computer hacking
Wikileaks has only posted some 200 of the 251,287 messages it says it has obtained. However, the entire bundle of cables has been made available to five publications, including the New York Times and the UK's Guardian newspaper.

Wikileaks

  • Website with a reputation for publishing sensitive material
  • Run by Julian Assange, an Australian with a background in computer network hacking
  • Released 90,000 secret US records of US military incidents about the war in Afghanistan and 400,000 similar documents on Iraq
  • Also posted video showing US helicopter killing 12 people - including two journalists - in Baghdad in 2007
  • Other controversial postings include screenshots of the e-mail inbox and address book of US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin
Concerns aired in the documents include the security of Pakistani nuclear material that could be used to make an atomic weapon.
The widespread use of computer hacking by China's government is also reported.
The leaked US embassy cables also reportedly include accounts of:
  • Iran attempting to adapt North Korean rockets for use as long-range missiles
  • Corruption within the Afghan government with concerns heightened when a senior official was found to be carrying more than $52m (£33m) in cash on a foreign trip; - President Hamid Karzai is described as ''extremely weak'' and prone to being persuaded by conspiracy theories
  • Bargaining to empty the Guantanamo Bay prison camp - including Slovenian diplomats being told to take in a freed prisoner if they wanted to secure a meeting with President Barack Obama
  • Germany being warned in 2007 not to enforce arrest warrants for US Central Intelligence Agency officers involved in an operation in which an innocent German citizen with the same name as a suspected militant was abducted and held in Afghanistan
  • US officials being instructed to spy on the UN leadership by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
  • The very close relationship between Russian PM Vladimir Putin and his Italian counterpart Silvio Berlusconi
  • Alleged links between the Russian government and organised crime
  • Yemen's president talking to then US Mid-East commander General David Petraeus about attacks on Yemeni al-Qaeda bases and saying: "We'll continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours"
  • Faltering US attempts to prevent Syria from supplying arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon
Shedding light on wars?
View of the WikiLeaks homepage taken in Washington on 28 November
2010 Wikileaks argues that the site's previous releases shed light on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The leaked embassy cables are both contemporary and historical, and include a 1989 note from a US diplomat in Panama City musing about the options open to Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega and referring to him as "a master of survival" - the author apparently had no idea that US forces would invade a week later and arrest Noriega.
In a statement, the White House said: "Such disclosures put at risk our diplomats, intelligence professionals, and people around the world who come to the United States for assistance in promoting democracy and open government.
"President Obama supports responsible, accountable, and open government at home and around the world, but this reckless and dangerous action runs counter to that goal."
No-one has been charged with passing the diplomatic files to the website but suspicion has fallen on US Army private Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst arrested in Iraq in June and charged over an earlier leak of classified US documents to Mr Assange's organisation.
The cables release was the third mass Wikileaks release of classified documents since it published 77,000 secret US files on the Afghan conflict in July, and 400,000 documents about the Iraq war in October.
Wikileaks argues the release of the documents has shed light on the wars, including allegations of torture and reports that suggest 15,000 additional civilian deaths in Iraq.

Before Bangladesh Strike, Mass Arrests !!!

Lowongan Kerja - Officials say they are arresting only those who might indulge in violence during the strike. -  Job Vacancy
Job Indonesia - The BNP has been holding rallies across the country for the last few days in protest at what they describe as anti-democratic moves by the government.
In many places police used tear gas and batons to disperse activists.
The BNP has called for a strike on Tuesday in protest against what it calls the Awami League-led government's inability to govern the country and its dictatorial methods.
It will be the second such opposition-sponsored action in about two weeks.
Business leaders and civil society activists have already urged the BNP to cancel, saying it will severely disrupt normal life and commercial activities.
The strike comes two weeks after BNP party leader Begum Khaleda Zia was evicted from her residence in military-owned house in the capital, Dhaka.
The house was leased to Ms Zia, a year after the assassination of her husband - former president General Zia-ur-Rahman - in a military coup in 1981.
The government said the lease to the house was illegal.
Her supporters argue that she should be allowed  staying in the house and the government's decision to evict her was political.
Analysts warn that if the two main parties do not resolve their differences soon, then the country may witness a series of strikes in the coming weeks.

Kurangi Ratusan Kalori Tanpa Diet

4. Ganti Dengan Teh. Penggemar teh yang minum empat cangkir teh hitam setiap hari, diketahui mengalami penurunan hormon pemicu stres yang bernama corisol 20%. Teh dapat membantu membakar kalori sebanyak 266 kalori per hari.

5. Kunyah Sebanyak 15 Kali.

How To Handle a Phone Interview

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Phone interviews are a common technique used determine which candidates will move forward in the interview process. They can also replace an actual in-person interview and so they are critical in determining whether or not you will be hired. Here are some important tips for phone interviews.

Be Available:
Be there when you say you will be. Recruiters and employers are often very busy calling other candidates and you don't want to give them the impression that you don't value their time. If you make an appointment to receive their call, be prepared to give them your full attention.
Have a quiet space where you won't be interrupted by kids, pets, or household chores your spouse or housemates might be doing, like running the dishwasher or vacuuming. Also ensure that there isn't any loud music or other distractions. Let others know that you are setting this time aside for an interview so that they won't be barging in.

Be Prepared:
Re-read your resume and know all your skills and strengths, just as you would for a regular interview. Just because you can have all your information in front of you and the interviewer can't see you looking at your resume, you still need to be prepared so that you'll sound polished and confident.

Be Professional:
Just as you would a regular interview, ensure you appear professional. Practice talking on the phone with a friend, simulating a phone interview. Keep an eye on your speech patterns and don't talk excessively or mumble. Be attentive to the interviewer. Because the interviewer can't see you, they can't see your body language or how you act when you respond to questions. All your feedback is coming to them through the phone, so it's critical that your phone skills be excellent.
Also, ensure that you aren't chewing gum, that you sit straight, you smile, and that you dress the part. No one will see how you are dressed but it will change your attitude. By thinking and acting like this is an interview (and it is!), you will come across as more confident and prepared.

Follow-up:
Just as you would a traditional interview, follow-up with the interviewer to let them know that you appreciate the time they took in interviewing you. Let them know again of your interest in the job and that you look forward to hearing from them regarding the position.
Remember, a phone interview is just like a regular interview. It can determine whether you get hired on the spot or get selected for a future interview. It's important to treat it just like any other interview you would participate in, so ensure that you are prepared, confident, and attentive to the interviewer.

Team Building Event on a Limited Budget

By Kim M Hesse

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Our client had 80 guests in Melbourne for a three day conference and on the second evening they wanted to host a team building event. We were on a very limited budget and while brainstorming cost effective team building ideas we came up with a pizza making competition.
This event provided us with the opportunity to take guests out of the hotel and place them in new and exciting surroundings.
Step one was to find the perfect venue. When working on a budget use your venue to set the scene. We found a rustic underground restaurant with a wood fired oven.
Being a weeknight we were able to hire the entire basement level at a great price. Note - Venues always want to fill their function space on a weeknight, you should be able to negotiate a better rate on a weeknight as opposed to a Friday or Saturday evening.
To start the evening off, we had the executive chef demonstrate the art of pizza making. The group were then split into teams and given the task of creating their own pizza's. This was a great way to provide a team building activity but also save money as they ate the pizza's they had made. Of course we supplied some professionally made pizza's as well!
In regard to themeing the venue, with not too much expense we transformed the space into a Little Italy. We utilised the venues free white table cloths and simply hired in red and white check table cloths to be placed over the white cloths provided by the venue.
We brought white candles from the reject shop and melted them onto empty wine bottle provided free of charge by the venue. Add some artificial grapes, again from the reject shop and presto a budget friendly and easy table decoration!
Lighting is also a great way to create effect without the expense. Here in little Italy we hired mini up-lights, when chatting to an audio visual supplier you can also ask for parcan lights. The lights were only $5 each and you get to choose what colour gel (in other words a thick cellophane cover) you would like. We chose gels in red and green placing them around the room to light the walls for a warm effect.
Our guests had a fantastic evening and as well as pizza making there was plenty of dough throwing!
Good Luck and Happy Eventing.

The Government Pay Scale

By Steven Bronsons

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Government jobs always score high when compared to any other job. There are lots of people who show a great amount of interest in these government jobs because of the kind of security it offers. Just a year ago the world was struck with recession.
Lots of private companies had to cut down their expenses and as a result of which many people lost their jobs. The craze for the government jobs have increased after this incident. If you are a resident of America then you might be aware of the federal jobs that are so much popular.
The federal government is known to employ at least thousands of people each year. Other than this you will be overwhelmed to learn that 3 million people in America work with the government. There are lots of other benefits that are offered to the government employers.
First of all you might be aware of the government pat scale. Other than the salary they also offer different kinds of insurances as other benefits. This is the reason why people are interested in the government jobs these days.

www.employmentmag.com

Many novices think that it requires too much time to build a reputation and to get a reliable and legitimate data entry employer. This is also the reason why they don’t struggle to find a data entry employer. But this should not be the behavior of an intelligent person. You should understand that there are a number of data entry employers online ready to buy your services. Most of these employers are legitimate and legal while very few are fake and scam. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have a small market research for determining the business standings of such employers. Once you are satisfied with the reviews and comments of specific buyers, you should start working for them.

The rule of thumb is to go for an employer that does not ask for any fee to offer their work. All legitimate and legal employers are free in providing the work and hence you don’t have to make and fee in order to get the work. The only fee that an employer may expend is that which it gives to the platform on which it is advertising about his/her job. But this fee is solely paid by the employer and not by employee. Moreover, the employee should make sure that the employer is not trying to contact illegally or trying to avoid the fees of the platform. Though this practice is very common on freelance websites but both the employer and employee should try to avoid such practices. Otherwise, it decreases down the reliability and surety of the payment for the effort of the employee. But one should also not consider that all employers are of such type. Most of the employers prefer to work legally and legitimately, which is a much safer and true way to work on internet.

The reason why people are doubtful about home based data entry jobs is that they are unable to directly correspond with the employer. If the employer is foreign and resides in some other continent, it is also very expensive to establish land line contacts with him. Therefore, many people miss a number of data entry jobs due to this reason. But one should understand that this is 21st century and here more than 99% of the business is done over internet. Therefore, you should also confess it and become a part of it in order to have long term success in with online home based jobs. It contains wide variety of opportunities and a huge earning potential. The amount you can earn through online home based jobs mostly depends upon your commitment. If you are able to give hours to the job every day, you can obviously earn a good amount of supplementary income. Otherwise, you can just cover your food and clothing expenses. The more you expand your work, the more are the chances to convert it into a business. And, once you have established a data entry business, you can ensure a good amount of monthly income – which is a dream of every person.

What to Look For in a Job Description

www.employmentmag.com

When you apply for a job, one of the first things you would want to know about is the job description. This is a document that explains what the job is all about. Through it, you should be able to form a picture in your mind what you have to do, what the limits are, what the bosses expect from you, what your output will be, or how you will have to spend your working hours within the company. You would not want to work in a company which doesn’t provide you with tools to work with, or information on how to accomplish your tasks.

On your end, you would have already prepared your resume even before you applied for a job to a particular company. You know you would have to stand out among other applicants for the same job. You consider yourself worthy and qualified for the work you seek. But is the organization or company worth getting into? You would need to do some research too, in order to become familiar with the company’s operations and products or services. But the bottom line is that you will have to depend on your position’s job description to see whether you will fit within the organization or not. Your decision to go ahead with your application will have to depend in part on the functions you will assume as delineated in the job description. Your career path within that company will be guided and influenced by the terms stated in the job description so you should be careful with your first step.

The job description for your particular position should include under what department you will be assigned and to whom you would be reporting to, what your overall responsibilities will be and in what key areas of the operations you will be particularly responsible for. You should pay special attention to the term of employment since this will play an important part in the future whether you would want to continue or not with the company.

In order for you to perform as expected, you have to make sure that the job description they provide you states the specific tasks you need to do. If they are simply looking for computer literate staff, be sure to ask if they are really looking for someone who is proficient in working with specific software programs. If the job description says “good communication skills”, ask if they want somebody who is actually able to communicate technical information to somebody how has no technical knowledge. Knowing what the particular demands and requirements are will ensure that you do the tasks as the bosses expected and you can contribute more to the overall productivity of the organization.

Most companies know that a well-written job description will help them get the best people for their job opening so they will put their best efforts in providing one that will convey to the job applicant a good “snapshot” of what the job requires through a good job description. It is up to you to see through embellishments, exaggerations and half-truths that some organizations may include in their job description just to lure qualified applicants.
